A paid template buys typography, spacing and a licence. None of the three is visible to the system that reads your file first, and some of what comes with them is actively costly.
What this layout usually means
- Careful typography and a considered grid, usually genuinely well made
- Frequently a sidebar or a two-column grid, because that is what looks designed
- Matching cover letter and reference sheet
- Supplied as a Word or Pages file to edit
What happens when a machine reads it
Not an opinion about design. These are the things a text extractor does with a page, and you can watch ours do them to your own file at the bottom of this page.
- What you are paying for
- Visual design. It matters at the point a person opens the file, which in most applications happens after a machine has already decided whether to pass it on.
- What often comes with it
- The two-column grid that makes it look designed is the thing that interleaves your text. The better the template looks, the more likely it is to be laid out in columns.
- Text boxes
- Word templates frequently position blocks using text boxes. Some extractors read them out of order, and a few skip them entirely — taking whole sections with them.
